Reality Check: Episode 2

In the second installment of our new series, “Reality Check” we find another apparent inconsistency from the folks running The Jane Hotel.  This time, in connection with the raid that took place on Friday, October 2nd.

From Tuesday, October 6th’s issue of The New York Post:

“A spokeswoman for the hotel, which operates a lounge in the ballroom, insisted that no violations were found.

But just one day later, The New York Post, armed with new details, reports:

“The ultra-hot Jane Hotel nightclub is now facing seven violations of city fire and building codes as a result of a surprise, multi-agency inspection ordered over the weekend by City Hall.”

And if you don’t believe the Post (don’t worry, we understand) you can actually see the violations yourself by clicking here.

Eater.com: Jane Hotel Stops Use of Large Ballroom & Upper Level

From Eater.com:  “Following last weekend’s visit by City Agencies and the SLA, the Jane has decided to restrict their capacity as they address some operational issues, and will only be using the front bar room and not the large ballroom space or upper level.”

Whether it was voluntary on the part of the Jane or a forced closure by one of the agencies, we’re happy to have a few quiet nights!

Eater.com Report: Jane Hotel “Raided” By City Agencies

2009_09_janeraided

Popular New York blog Eater.com reports that the Jane Hotel was raided on Friday night by a number of city agencies including the Department of Health, Department of Buildings, the New York Police Department and the Fire Department.  Further reports indicate that the raid took place at around 11:30 PM and that the Jane Hotel’s “lounge” area will now be restricted to fewer than 100 patrons.

We love law enforcement!   Now, Hopefully those denied entry won’t be making a mess of our street.

Reality Check: Episode 1

Welcome to our new series, “Reality Check,” where we find some apparent inconsistencies related to the Jane Hotel.  In our first episode, we find Jane Hotel operators recently quoted in The New York Times, The Villager and Brick Underground defending their establishment.

1. “We very much see it as a large living room.”

–Right, all living rooms have huge speaker systems, live music and DJs.

2. “There is no dance floor. There is no space for dancing, and we don’t permit it.”

–Perhaps all of the reviews are talking about a different Jane Hotel.

3. “Smoking is simply not permitted inside.”

–Well, the New York Post published a photo the other day of girls smoking inside the Jane, the Brick Underground story clearly documents it happening and an SRO tenant gave us a thick stack of photos proving otherwise- check them out on Flickr!

The Villager: “Jane ‘living room’ is a living hell”

There is a great article in today’s issue of The Villager.

“One Of The Hottest Clubs In Town…”

Media Bistro’s PR Newser ran an interesting piece today that began: “In just four months, the Jane Hotel has become one of the hottest clubs in town… Except, the Jane isn’t a club at all, but a hotel bar operating without a cabaret license.”

First off, that the neighbors have hired a publicist is just amazing.  Only in New York.  Second, we can’t seem to understand why the Jane Hotel’s publicist is so upset at the blogs.  Is it really the blogs’ fault that her client made the story such a lay-up for the other side?

New York Times Chimes In

The New York Times has now stepped up to the plate with a report in their City Room blog. Interestingly, they found the “PR” side of the story more compelling than all of the real issues that were pointed out in a brilliant article due to run this past week.

New York Post, NY1 and Gothamist Continue Coverage

janehotelnoise

Finally, some great coverage in today’s New York Post on how the Jane Hotel is affecting the children on this block.  The article details how “Most nights, (Jane Street resident) Melissa (Hickson) is blasted out of bed by a pulsating sound system that booms next door. Taxi horns blare until all hours. Partygoers scream.”  The story was also covered on NY1’s “In the Papers” and picked up again in The Gothamist–who provided this amazing photo!

Perhaps if the nature of the operation were as Jane Hotel represented to Community Board 2 and the State Liquor Authority this would not be a problem.
